Moderator: Iya Khalil, Ph.D., Founder, Gene Network Sciences
Iya Khalil oversees the application of the company's disease and drug simulation technology in alliances with pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Gene Network Sciences (GNS) is a privately held biotechnology firm based in Cambridge MA, at the leading edge of today's convergence of breakthroughs in genomics and supercomputing. Our company, is a uniquely collaborative team of computational physicists, mathematicians, chemists, molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, and software engineers. Through our own discovery efforts and in partnership with many leading innovator health care companies, we are building the future of medicine by revealing the molecular basis of health and disease through the critical biological relationships among genes and proteins, disease progression, and drug efficacy and toxicity. And we are doing this faster than ever thought possible. A frequent speaker at industry events and conferences, she has extensive experience in reverse engineering and forward simulations of large-scale genetic and biochemical networks. Dr. Khalil is an inventor on a number of pending patents and has published multiple articles on in silico technologies applied to drug discovery and development. Prior to joining GNS, she worked at Cornell University, University of Washington and Abbott Labs. Dr. Khalil holds a B.S. in physics from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in physics from Cornell University.
Paul Bleicher, MD, PhD, Chief Medical Officer, Humedica Paul Bleicher, MD PhD is Chief Medical Officer for Humedica, a next-generation clinical informatics company that provides novel business intelligence solutions to the health care and life science industry. At Humedica, he has responsibility for medical informatics, data analytics and consulting, and product development. Prior to joining the founding team of Humedica, he was the founder and Chairman of Phase Forward where he grew the organization over an 11 year period from concept to a publicly traded company that is now a leading provider of integrated clinical trial data management software and safety solutions for the biopharmaceutical industry. He was the original CEO of Phase Forward and throughout his tenure there focused on corporate strategy. Until his departure in October 2008, he served continuously as Chairman and remains a member of the Board of Directors. Before Phase Forward, Dr. Bleicher served as Vice President of Clinical Affairs at Alpha-Beta Technology, and Director, Early Phase Services at PAREXEL International. Dr. Bleicher received his MD and PhD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, specializing in cellular immunology, and his BS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He trained in internal medicine at the Beth Israel Hospital, and dermatology at Harvard Medical School/ Massachusetts General Hospital, did a post-doctoral fellowship at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in molecular biology, and began his career as a physician/investigator and Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
Tom Arneman, President, Ceiba Solutions
Tom has spent his career identifying and implementing IT best practices in the Life Sciences. He has been instrumental in helping companies improve their data management systems, connect with a diverse array of partners, and streamline their business processes. Tom’s background as an Industrial Engineer and IT Strategist, coupled with his supply chain consulting and managerial experience allow him to provide Ceiba Solutions and its customers with a real world perspective on how to define and solve problems. Tom, working in the Boston area, and at the Ceiba Solutions HQ in Cambridge, is currently implementing Ceiba’s vision of making technology affordable, accessible, and easy to use for Life Science customers. Ceiba’s Solutions is a global software development and IT services company that brings affordable options for solving mission-critical business problems to companies in the Life Science and Healthcare industries. We deliver solutions that conform exactly to the way the business operates, helping customers build new business processes while preserving what already works. Our team consists of expert people from both the scientific and operational sides of Life Science. Some hold doctoral degrees in biology, while others are experienced practitioners in the areas of clinical trials and manufacturing. On the information technology side we apply open standards to application integration and composite software development. We also offer remote managed services for both applications and integration creating a single point of incident capture and resolution.
Joseph Holtschlag, MBA, Manager, Government Affairs, athenahealth
Joseph Holtschlag is a Manager in Government Affairs at athenahealth, Inc. He is responsible for all athenahealth’s outreach and partnerships with state government-based healthcare IT programs in the Central United States. Prior to joining the Government Affairs team at athena, he was a product manager, responsible for the strategic direction of athenahealth’s electronic health record, athenaClinicalsSM. In particular, Mr. Holtschlag has responsibility for designing scalable practice solutions for pay-for-performance, medical home, health information exchange, athenaCommunicatorSM integration, security and privacy, and charge integration. Prior to joining athenahealth, Mr. Holtschlag managed a team of consultants at Masspro, a Medicare Quality improvement organization. He managed several other federal and local pilot projects in EHR adoption, pay-for-performance, patient centered medical home and secure messaging. Prior to Masspro, Mr. Holtschlag was also a Senior Systems Analyst at the Joslin Diabetes Center, where he built and implemented a customized EHR system and was lead developer for a variety of health-related technology projects. The projects were awarded the MS-HUG (Microsoft Healthcare Users Group) Innovation Award in Disease Surveillance in 2007. Mr. Holtschlag has an MBA from Purdue University and a BA from The University of Michigan.
